Do you know what are our peculiar traditions during Easter?

On morning of Easter Monday, chanting old rhymes, girls are sprinkled with perfumes. According to old country customs, boys used to throw buckets of fresh water over girls in marriageable age. The ritual now involves women and men regardless of age. In return, boys are offered hand painted Easter eggs (symbols of fertility), home-made cakes and palinka. Hungarian Easter eggs have special ornaments, symbols, colours and techniques of decoration that vary from region to region. The special feature of Easter Monday is the Easter feast. The rich meal includes home-made ham, lamb dishes, fresh spring onion, radish and horseradish.

Since 1987, Hollókő has been part of the UNESCO world heritage. The revival of Palóc folk traditions, the village life of past times is now demonstrated together with Easter folk customs. One can try painting eggs, jiggering and many other handcrafts. Easter can certainly not pass without the tradition of boys throwing buckets of water over girls.

Easter Market at Schönbrunn Palace • 21 March – 6 April 2015

The Easter market at Schönbrunn Palace is considered to be among the most romantic Easter markets. With the Baroque palace in the background 60 exhibitors offer not only all kinds of culinary delights but also beautiful Easter decorations and crafts from all over Austria. Children having fun in the marzipan Easter Bunny workshop, making Easter flower arrangements, on the Easter Nest Hunt and in the Children’s Museum, while the grown-ups enjoy the entertainment at “Jazz at the Easter Market”.

Old Vienna Easter Market at the Freyung • 20 March – 6 April 2015

A beautiful old square in the Old City, piles up the largest mountain of Easter eggs in Europe every year totaling about 40,000 painted Easter eggs. There are also numerous Easter specialties from Osterpinze Easter bread to roast Easter lamb, craftwork, floristry and, for the little ones, an Easter handicraft workshop, puppet plays and a rabbit pen. The Altwiener Easter Market is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year with a big party on 5 April.
