Located in Józsefváros, Budapest’s 8th district, Rákóczi Square has reinvented itself many times. Once a calf market, later one of Budapest’s greenest squares and, for a time, a well-known nightlife spot, the area is now becoming one of the city’s most interesting neighbourhoods.
At its heart is the historic Rákóczi Market Hall, which opened in 1897. Today, the market is surrounded by historic buildings, cafés, independent shops, restaurants and bars. The food scene is particularly diverse, with Hungarian favourites alongside ramen, Korean food, Italian classics and Nigerian home cooking.
Time Out also highlights the changing streets around the square. The neighbourhood have become greener and more pedestrian-friendly, with local residents involved in the redesign.
