Joseph Cornell (1903 – 1972) was one of the most original and influential artists of the twentieth century. He received no formal artistic training, he could not draw, paint, or sculpt, and yet his work had a deep and lasting influence on subsequent generations of American artists, from Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, James Rosenquist and Andy Warhol through the early practitioners of Minimalism to many still working today.
